Lots of News

I haven't posted in a while, and a lot of things have happened! I got my CompTIA Network+ certification, which is going to help me in my day job. But that's not what you want to read about - you want the dirty details on freelancing.

Well, have I got some news for you. I've had TWO orders on Fiverr for music reviews! One of them was for a $10.00USD 400 word review, and the other was for a $15.00USD 600 word review! I honestly couldn't believe it when I got my first request, but I nailed it and got a five star review, which is super important in the world of Fiverr. I think it was because my blog actually had content on it - I was writing free reviews in my spare time about bands I liked. So when someone clicked on my Fiverr ad and went to my blog, they could trust that I was able to put a few coherent thoughts about an album together. The content on my blog also allowed me to take better pictures to put as my gig photo, which I believe also helped.

Apart from those, there were also three other opportunities that didn't pan out. The first was someone who messaged me on Fiverr asking me to review their album. I said I was willing, and asked them to put in a request. They ghosted me. Maybe I pitched myself poorly, or maybe the guy changed his mind. The second occurrence was someone asking me to write a ton of articles for their guitar blog. 1500 words on each one. I was thinking that I hit the jackpot. My rate so far has been $5.00USD every 200 words, which comes out to $0.025USD per word. That's pretty cheap, but I figure since I don't have that much experience right now it's reasonable, and it's a rate I'm comfortable at. At that, for a 1500 article, I would be able to make $37.50USD before Fiverr's 20% cut, which comes out to $30.00USD. It takes me about an hour to write 400 words. I think I could bang out a 1500 word article in about three hours, so roughly $10.00USD per hour which isn't atrocious. The guy who I was talking to, however, wanted me to send him an offer for $20.00USD. That's $0.013 a word. I don't care how great of an 'opportunity' it is, I'm not working for peanuts. I know my worth, and I'm comfortable with the rate I'm at. I told him my rate and asked him to put it through my gig, and he ghosted me. I wasn't upset though - I was actually proud of myself for sticking up for myself. The third opportunity wasn't through Fiverr, but through an email. I got approached by someone asking me to review their album on my blog. I sent them my rate, and they ghosted me. I'm guessing it was a big email to a large number of people and not a targeted one, so I wasn't too upset. I was proud of that one too - being able to ask for what I wanted and not working for free.

I've been so surprised that I'm actually making money off of this venture so early, but I'm not complaining. I'm going to focus my energies on the music blog for now since that seems to be the one picking up the most steam. I'll try to do the psych blog when I get bored with music reviews. I think that's a good system and won't stretch me out too far. I also set up a PayPal business account in case I ever get work outside of Fiverr.

I think that's all for now. I'm so excited that this is picking up steam, and I can't wait to write more.
