The Beginning

I am writing this laying in bed after a long day of working my day job, preparing to move apartments, and trying to get my freelancing career started. Currently, I haven't sold a single product. I hope that will change soon, and I hope I can document my successes and failures for anybody interested in trying their hand at freelancing.

We've been preparing for a move to our new apartment for months, and now move-in day is only four days away. In that time, I met with a good friend who was in town with his girlfriend for some coffee. I learned that she had recently quit her day job to freelance write full-time. I think that gave me the kick in the butt to really pursue this myself. I've always toyed with the idea of freelancing, but could never decide on what to do, or how to start. That meeting, combined with the whole new apartment new beginnings vibe I'm feeling right now, has led me to finally bite the bullet and take my first steps into the world of freelancing.

I've decided on two skills to start - psychology writing and music review writing. I hope to expand this to include bass guitar recording, and voice over work as well. There were a ton of things I wanted to do, but the general idea I gleamed from forums and common sense was to focus on only a few things. I narrowed it down to four things I think I could really excel at. Hopefully at least one of these takes off. I've set up the first two on Fiverr, and hope to set up the other two on there once I've settled into the new place and can set up my recording equipment.

Currently, my plan is to document my journey here. Wait to get some gigs on Fiverr. While waiting, I am going to try and write blog posts related to psychology and music reviews to practice and build a portfolio. I'll drop links once I'm happy with them and how they look. I'm not sure how to build a portfolio for the bass and voice acting stuff, maybe just play a few lines and record a voice reel. We'll see. Here's hoping I stay motivated and follow this through. I hope this blog will keep me accountable.
